"Formula 3 Season 1" table of contents
When, in late 2016, the WCSLeague returned after being absent for a few years, we were very interested in starting two cars in either the Formula 3 Season 1 or the BMW E90 Season 1. In the end, we decided to go with the open wheelers.
STAX Racing started in said Formula 3 series with drivers Casper Onwijn and Philipp König.
During the first round, Philipp König was in the Top 15 for most of the races, but in the end he classified just one place outside of the points in P16 for race one and retired in the second race. Casper Onwijn struggled with pace for both races, but managed to bring home the car in 23th and 25th place respectively.
Before the second round, Casper told the team that he had to step down from his race seat. This meant that Philipp was the only STAX Racing driver starting in Monza. After starting in 16th place, he made contact with a lagging car and had to pit while being in last place. However, a great comeback drive meant that he finished in P13 in the main race. The following sprint ended early for him after he crashed with a competitor.
The third round of the championship was held in Magny-Cours. In the main race, Philipp had a good start and was able to gain a few positions, but struggled with cold tires. For the most part of the race he was stuck between Hoekstra and Rouault . He was able to get by Hoekstra during the pitstops, but was unable to defend against the Dutchman ontrack and finished the race behind Wopke in P9. Philipp was starting the second race from Pole Position and was able to match the frontrunners’ pace in the first few laps. In the penultimate lap, he was in P6 but went onto the grass and spun out. Due to the crash into the barrier he had suspension damage in the last lap, but luckily he had enough of a gap to Menno Klont to finish in P9 again.
Patrick had two relatevly quiet races. In the first race, Schroten had a bad start which meant that Patrick was stuck between him and Wesley Stefano and crashed. The STAX Racing driver had to pit to repair the damage and rejoined the race in second-to-last position. After that, he was able to fight his way through the grid and finished the race in 16th place, just outside the points. He had quite a good start in Race Two and was able to battle with Simonjic and Richards. On Lap 7 however he made a mistake in the last corner and had to retire the car.
The fourth round of the season was held in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, both drivers struggled and had difficult races: Philipp retired from the first race with brake issues and came 12th in the second race. Patrick finished 11th in the first race and retired due to suspension damage in the second race.
The next round of the championship was held at the Nürburgring. However, no STAX Racing driver took part in the race. Unfortunately, neither Philipp König nor Patrick Wannemüller were able to attend the next race at Barber Motorsports Park. Both drivers also told the team that they would be unavailable for any future races this season. This meant that we were without drivers for a few days. However, the team signed Kevin Budie for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, Kevin Budie was not able to turn up for his first two races and then announced he didn’t want to do any races this season. As we were unable to sign another driver, we withdrew from the series.
