WCS GP3 Series Round 1 Report

As previously reported, STAX Racing entered this year’s WCSLeague GP3 Series which started in Melbourne on June 21st. Here is our race report.

Race 1: Geoffrey Fournier started from second position and, after a mega start, lead the race for some laps. However, on lap 5, Lars Brugman was able to overtake the Frenchman on the outside going into Ascari corner. Unfortunately, Lars made slight contact with Geoffrey in the process who spun out and lost three more places. One lap later, he then had to pit for repairs and rejoined the race in 19th place. In the following laps, he was able to set very fast laptimes and gained thirteen places in just six laps! On lap 14, Rouault swerved while breaking for the Clark chicane, forcing Geoffrey onto the grass. After rejoining the race in tenth position, he fought back to finish the race in P8.

Rob Mason started from P19, but had a superb start and was in P12 entering the Clark chicane in the first lap. Unfortunately, he touched the kerbs, spun out and had to wait for the whole field to pass until he could safely rejoin the race. Later in the race, he lost his rear wing in the first corner, which meant he had to crawl back to the pits for a lengthy repair. In the end, he finished in P24.

Race 2: Geoffrey started from third position, but when he exited the first turn he was in the lead already. In the first few laps, he was able to build a gap to second placed Roy Schroten. After the Dutchman closed the gap and tried to overtake the STAX Racing driver, there was a slight touch and Geoffrey spun out of the lead for the second time this evening. In the next laps, Geoffrey had battles for positions with Johan Lindberg, Lars and Niels Brugman and Daniel Brewer. In the second to last corner of the race, Geoffrey tried to overtake Lindberg, but ended up facing the wrong way. Instead of spinning the car around, he tried to finish the race in reverse. What followed was a “drag race” on the front straight, with Geoffrey narrowly missing out to Daniel Cziranku and Wesley Stefano and finishing the race in P12.

Going backwards: Geoffrey finished Race 2 in memorable style.

Rob started the second race from 23rd position. However, after a mega first lap, he was 15th already. Unfortunately, the second race wasn’t incident-free for him either, which meant that he finished 18th in the end.

After the first round of the season, STAX Racing is 8th in the Teams’ Championship. Geoffrey Fournier lies in 9th position in the Drivers’ Championship, while Rob Mason is 24th. The next race will be held at the Red Bull Ring on July, 5th 2017.

Unfortunately, WCSLeague couldn’t provide us with a complete race results table yet. We will update this post when it’s available. You can find the broadcast of the round below.
