The sixth round of the World GT Series was held in Silverstone. Here is our race report.
Leaving Monza, Chris Shepherd was third in the Drivers’ Championship, followed by Nico Barclay in P4. For the first time in our team’s history, STAX Racing was leading a Teams’ Championship, two points ahead of ACR Zakspeed.
The whole round was dominated by changing weather conditions as the much-anticipated rain started half way through the qualifying. Nico Barclay finished the session in fifth position while Chris Shepherd set the eight fastest lap. However a number of drivers, notably ACR Zakspeed’s Risto Kappet, decided to start from the pitlane as they changed tyres in the last minute when it began to rain seconds before the formation lap begun. Kappet’s teammate Dennis Lind started on slicks, but lost ground already before the green flag and spun half way through the first lap to meet his teammate in the rear of the grid. This meant that Chris, who started the race from seventh position, made up two places in the first lap alone while Nico jumped from P5 to P3. Nico decided to pit quite early in Lap 16, rejoining the race in P15. In the following laps, he was up to 5 seconds faster than the guys ahead of him and immediately started gaining positions. However, changing tyres early meant that later in the race, he struggled to keep the drivers with fresher tyres behind him. In the end, Nico finished the race in P4. Meanwhile, Chris also gambled during the pit stops, electing not to change tyres at all. While this resulted in a faster pitstop and him rejoining in second position, he also had problems defending against faster drivers later on. He finished the race in fifth position. The race had a dramatic ending when the leader Kevin Ryan, who overtook Schoonvliet with few laps to go, made contact with a backmarker in the very last corner. The resulting spin put him third behind the Edonis duo of . After the race, was handed an eight-second penalty for exceeding tracklimits multiple times, which dropped him back to third place.
With two races to go, Nico overtook Chris in the Drivers’ Championship and is now in third place, one position ahead of Chris. We are still leading Teams’ Championship with 142 points, followed by Edonis Engineering (130 points) and ACR Zakspeed (116 points.)
The next race will be held at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on June 14th, 2018. Below you can find the broadcast and the results of the British round. Also don’t forget to watch Nico’s video of his start to the race.
