The first round of the 2018 World GT Series was held in Malaysia last week. Here is our race report.
Editor’s note: Due to technical difficulties, we are unable to publish an in-depth race report for the first round of the 2018 World GT Series and only post a short summary of the race.
Last year’s World GT series was canceled mid-season because of dwindling participation numbers. A lot of drivers commented that the 2017 mod was unbalanced and that a 1-hour-race doesn’t fit the series. As a result, the GPVWC management decided that the 2018 World GT Series should have 90 minutes races, so that different pit stops strategies can be considered. Furthermore, Studio 397’s GT3 Pack was used as those cars promised a balanced field with high quality models.
Chris Shepherd qualified in sixth place. He was able to stay close to the train behind P2. Chris was the first of the front-runners to pit and, with new tyres, was able to set the fastest lap of the race. For a while it looked like his strategy with the undercut could work out. However, after the race Chris commented that changing tyres was the wrong decision, as they are very durable and you can’t make up the time you lose during the pitstop with fresher rubber. In the end, Chris finished sixth.
had a penalty from last season and had to start from the back of the grid in 34th position. He had an action-packed race and fought his way through the grid to finish seventh, gaining 27 positions! Nico uploaded a video showcasing his passes during the race. We highly recommend watching it!
After the first round, STAX Racing is fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. The series will travel to Australia next, to race on the legendary Mount Panorama Circuit on April, 5th 2018.
